The La Mortella Gardens are considered among the most beautiful botanical gardens in Europe and are one of Ischia's most extraordinary attractions. Created by British composer Sir William Walton and his Argentine wife Susana, the gardens were developed from a rocky hillside in Forio starting in the 1950s and now contain over 1000 rare and exotic plant species from around the world.
What to see in the gardens
The gardens are divided into lower and upper sections. The lower garden centres around a central pool surrounded by tropical plants, tree ferns and waterfalls. The upper garden offers terraced areas with panoramic views over Forio and the sea, fountains, a Thai pavilion and the Walton Museum dedicated to the composer's life and work.
Music events
La Mortella regularly hosts classical music concerts and events, particularly in spring and autumn. The natural theatre created among the rocks is a magical setting for live performances.
