Monte Epomeo Ischia: how to reach the summit and what to see

Monte Epomeo is the volcanic heart of Ischia, rising to 789 metres above sea level. Its summit offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views in the Mediterranean — on clear days you can see the entire Bay of Naples, Capri, Vesuvius and even the Amalfi Coast.

How to reach Monte Epomeo

There are several routes to the summit. The most popular starts from Fontana, a small village in the municipality of Serrara Fontana. From Fontana you can walk up on foot (about 45 minutes) or hire a mule for the steeper sections. The path is well marked and not technically difficult, though proper shoes are recommended.

What to see at the summit

At the top you will find the small chapel of San Nicola di Bari carved into the tuff rock, a hermitage and a panoramic terrace. In good weather the view stretches over the entire island and beyond.

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn are ideal for the hike — temperatures are mild and visibility is excellent. Avoid the midday heat in summer and always bring water.
