Forio is the largest municipality on the island of Ischia and one of the most fascinating. Historically a landing point for pirates, it was defended by a series of Saracen watchtowers still visible today. Its main landmark is the iconic white Church of the Soccorso, perched dramatically on the rocks above the sea.
Church of Santa Maria del Soccorso
The Church of the Soccorso is undoubtedly the most photographed monument in Ischia. Painted entirely white, it stands on a promontory at the western tip of the island and offers breathtaking sunset views. Inside, the church preserves numerous votive offerings brought by sailors saved from shipwrecks.
The Saracen towers
Around Forio you can see several ancient watchtowers built to warn the population of pirate raids. The Torre di Guevara and the Torre del Torone are the best preserved and can be visited.
La Mortella Gardens
Just outside Forio, the La Mortella Gardens created by composer William Walton are considered among the most beautiful botanical gardens in Europe, with over 1000 rare plant species from around the world.
Citara Beach and Poseidon Park
Forio is also home to the famous Citara Beach and the Poseidon Thermal Park — perfect for a relaxing day by the sea combined with thermal wellness.
